Oh My! Another Disater Averted!
We were so glad that after Ardyn's bout of gastro that we didn't have to take her to the hospital to be rehydrated, and then I end up at the Emergency Room today anyway......for a completely different problem!
She decided to swallow some batteries.
They were out of the door bell, and were the size of about a 10c piece. I had put them on the kitchen bench so that I knew what type I had to buy, and she managed to climb up on a stool today and get at them...and promptly ate them. Then told me about it. I'm so glad though, because if she didn't, I would have had no idea. There was not a sound from her.
Now before I get any flack for leaving such small objects in her reach, I didn't. Or at least I thought that I didn't. The bench is up to my chest. About 1.1m. She's just really agile, and I didn't know that she was capable of climbing on the stools.
Live it, learn it. I know now.
So I spent about 3 hours in pediatric emergency at Royal North Shore Hospital, while they decided what to do.
First they had to work out where they were. As if they were lodged in her esophegus, they would have to come out surgically. We found out after the X-ray that they had in fact got to her stomach. We then had to find out whether they had to be removed via a Gastroscopy, or if we could wait for them to pass. Then after an hour wait we got some good news. The Pediatric Gastrointestinal Surgeon said that the throat and esophegus are the thinnest part of the digestive system, and if they got down to her stomach, she should be able to pass them in her faeces.
Yay! So know we've got to look out for batteries in her poo!
But in the meantime we have to watch out for any stomach pain, and if that happens, straight to hospital.
So she's here at home, tired (as she missed her nap with all the excitement), but well. No idea that anything has happened. I wouldn't be looking forward to shitting a battery out if I was her though. I am so glad that she's too young to understand.
And apparently, the doctors at the hospital told us, this is really not an uncommon thing to happen AT ALL. I wonder if they just say that, or if it's really true???

No Kirst is not uncommon, I had child swallow one, and yes we had to wait for it to come out the other end... The other stuck one up their nose, which had to result in a minor surgery to remove it... The week later he stuck blue tack up his nose, the following week a basketball valve.. Yup he had a fascination with his nose....
Hope Ardyn, comes through this ordeal unscathed..
